The King Has Two Bodies: Howie Morenz and the Fabrication of Memory
|
| Abstract |
The author argues that the heroic identity associated with Howie Morenz (1902-1937), a star player for the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club, was in fact fabricated by both the Canadiens and the NHL through Morenz's funeral and the playing of a memorial game in his honour. Morenz's jersey number was the first that was ever "retired" in the NHL.
