Abstract |
Includes an analysis of the attitudes of Louis-Joseph Papineau (1786-1871) and other middle-class Francophone Lower Canadians, as well as urban working class and rural Francophones, towards English-speaking merchants and bureaucrats in Quebec City and Montreal. The author analyzes the differing attitudes of Quebec City and Montreal Francophones towards English speakers in relation to the Francophone support for Papineau's Patriote political party.
