Abstract |
The author outlines the history of Jewish loan societies, most of which were credit unions, set-up in Montreal in the early twentieth century to help small businessmen borrow funds to establish their companies. The first such society, the Papineau Gemiluth Chassodim Co-Operative Syndicate, was set-up in 1911. It was composed of sixty founding members, the majority whom lived in a small concentrated area around Papineau Street in the city's east end. Eight other cooperatives were created in 1912 and fourteen more in 1913, together totaling 800 members. By 1929 there were sixty-one active Jewish cooperatives in Montreal. The author points out that by the end of the Second World War, most of these Jewish community financial institutions had closed, impacted by the Depression of the 1930s and the fact that most Jews had abandoned small businesses in the 1940s in order to find more stable and better-paying jobs.
