Notes on Nursing : Women's Empowerment as Home Health Care Providers in 19th Century Montreal
|
| Abstract |
The author examines how middle class Anglophone women in late-nineteenth century Montreal conceived of their role as purveyors and executors of evidence-based caregiving, compared to Francophone women, following the 1885 smallpox epidemic that struck the city. Using a book written by Montrealer Mrs. Daniel Macpherson titled "Notes on Nursing: How to Treat Smallpox – Guaranteed to Prevent Disfiguration and Lessen Suffering" (1890), the author argues that this text demonstrates how women in a particular geographical and historical context responded to public health outreach efforts.
