Anglophone Presence in the Early Novels of Anne Hébert

Abstract |
The author examines the role of "les Anglais" (Englishness) in three novels by Anne Hébert. Represented primarily by George Nelson from Hébert's novel "Kamouraska", the war bride from her "Les Enfants du sabba", and the isolated Protestant Anglophone coastal village of Griffin Creek in "Les Fous de Bassan", the author examines the Anglophone presence in view of their relationship to the Francophone presence in the texts and informed by the history of French and English interaction in Quebec. The author concludes that the "Anglais"in Hébert's work seem destined for a bad end, and he looks at the connection between this fate and the quality of being "Anglais".
