La place des femmes dans la Société d'art contemporain : Montréal, 1939-1948
Abstract
The Société d'art contemporain (Contemporary Arts Society) was formed in January 1939 to promote public awareness of modern art in Montreal. Membership was open to all artists of "non-academic tendencies." John Lyman, a prominent Montreal painter and critic, was the society's founder and first president. The author focuses on eight women artists -- Marguerite Doernbach (Peggy Anderson), Louise Gadbois, Prudence Heward, Sybil Kennedy, Mabel Lockerby, Jeanne Rhéaume, Marian Scott, Fanny Wiselberg -- who were members of the Société d'art contemporain in the 1940s -- and their role in promoting modern art in Montreal.
