Abstract |
There were two candidates in the Montreal West by-election of April and May 1832 -- Stanley Bagg and Daniel Tracey. The author claims that the the French-Canadian bourgeoisie and English-speaking Montreal, except for the Irish, favoured Bagg, the candidate of the "Bureaucratic Party". The Irish and most French Canadians favoured Tracey, the candidate of the "Parti canadien". On May 21, 1832, British soldiers from the Montreal garrison opened fire on electors at a polling station, killing three people. The author analyzes the election, giving a break down of the support each candidate received. Tracey was declared winner of the election, but died on July 18, 1832 during a cholera epidemic that hit Montreal that summer.
