Abstract
An report of an archaeological study at the nineteenth century Brewster sawmill complex on Montreal's Lachine Canal. Attracted by the economic development potential offered by the opening of the Lachine Canal in 1825, Benjamin Brewster purchased a large estate on the banks of the canal in 1830 and 1841. The property corresponds to present-day Atwater, Notre-Dame and Dominion streets and the canal. Brewster dug a basin on the site in the early 1840s and erected a steam sawmill just east of the basin, not far from present-day Charlevoix Street, in the mid-1850s. The sawmill changed hands several time before it closed in 1921.
