Jewish Political Behavior: Liberalism or Rational Political Tradition? The 1989 Quebec Election and the Equality Party
|
Abstract |
The author argues that Montreal's Jewish political behaviour is based on rationality and pragmatism rather than reflexive liberalism. He studies the pre-1989 election editorials of the Montreal weekly newspaper, The Suburban, a paper he maintains is overwhelmingly Jewish in content and orientation, which was extremely supportive of the Equality Party of Quebec. Four members of the party were elected from the Montreal area in the 1989 provincial election. He argues that the Suburban served as a tool for direct and indirect Jewish support for the Equality Party.
