Title
Andrew Fernando Holmes : Protestantism, Medicine, and Science in Nineteenth-Century Montreal
Abstract
Andrew Fernando Holmes (1797-1860) was the first Dean of McGill University's Medical Faculty, and famous for his role in reforming medical education in British North America. He and a colleague first proposed teaching medicine both in the classroom and clinically on the wards of the Montreal General Hospital and no longer in private apprenticeship The author examines Holmes' personal and professional spheres, especially how the doctor was deeply influenced by his evangelical Anglican faith and connection to English Montreal's Protestant community. The author also offers vignettes of the early Montreal General Hospital and the "politics of medicine" in Lower Canada in the early and middle decades of the nineteenth century.
