The Montreal-based North West Company was officially created in 1783 in opposition to other Montreal fur trading interests and to the London-based Hudson Bay Company. The company merged with the Hudson Bay Company in 1821. The author includes information on the mostly-Scottish Montreal merchants who established the the company.
