Les rapports linguistiques à l’Hydro-Québec / Language Relations in Hydro-Quebec
Abstract
An account of a language-of-work study conducted by the sociology department of the Université de Montréal in 1963 following the transformation of Hydro-Québec from a predominately Montreal-based state-run organization, created in 1944 with the nationalization of the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Corporation, to a province-wide company when the provincial government nationalized all of Quebec's privately-owned and municipal electrical generating companies. Most of the executives and supervisory personnel of the privately-owned companies in 1963 were English speaking. The object of the study was to produce a language-of-work policy that would see French becoming the working language at Hydro-Québec.
