From Ayrshire, Scotland to Canada: The History of a Hutchison Family in Scotland and Canada 1650 to 2009
|
Abstract |
The author traces some twelve generations of the Hutchison family, including James Hutchison who came to Canada about 1833; his son, Montreal mason and builder William Hutchison, and grandsons architect Alexander Cowper Hutchison and builder John Henry Hutchison. William's younger brother was flour inspector and miller Matthew Hutchison, married to Helen Ogilvie. Alexander Cowper Hutchison was one of Montreal's first locally trained architects and his professional life spanned some six decades, beginning about 1850. The buildings he designed include McGill's Redpath Museum, the Erskine and American United Church (now an annex to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), the La Presse building and Montreal City Hall.
