Abstract |
A history of paper-making in Canada. The first paper mill in Canada was built in St. Andrews East (now Saint-André d'Argenteuil) and began producing in 1805. Called the Argenteuil Paper Manufactory, it was built by American-born Walter Ware. In 1809 it was acquired by James Brown (1776-1845), the Scottish-born proprietor of the Montreal Gazette who ran the mill until 1834. It went out of business when Brown was not able to re-new his lease on the mill site. The author also outlines the history of Quebec paper mills, including the Stanstead Paper Mills, built in the Eastern Townships by Silas H. Dickerson (1799-1857) in 1823, The Canada Paper Company of Montreal, whose origins trace back to 1859, and the E.B. Eddy Company on the Ottawa River in Hull, which ventured into paper-making in 1890.
