'The Voice of the Minister Heard in Words of Exhortation and Instruction': Abraham de Sola and the Jewish Sermon in Victorian Montreal, and Beyond
Abstract
The London-born Rabbi Abraham de Sola (1825-1882) immigrated to Montreal in 1847 to become minister of the city's Shearith Israel, Portuguese Congregation. The author explores how de Sola perceived and used sermons in his agenda of promoting what the author calls a modern Orthodox Judaism, and what de Sola called "consistent" Judaism. The author explores the sermons' principal themes, their intended audiences, and how de Sola used the sermons to promote "consistent" Judaism. A biographical background of de Sola is also offered.
