Intersecting Discourses: Deaf Institutions and Communities in Montreal, 1850-1920
|
Abstract |
An examination of the conditions that led to the emergence of deaf networks of sociability and solidarity connected with Montreal’s three schools for the deaf between the mid-nineteenth century and 1920. The author argues that the bilingual character of Montreal, as well as the existence of two main Christian religions, gave deaf life in the city a different flavour compared to the United States and France.
