| Abstract |
The author studies the relationship between five Dissenting Protestant groups - the Quakers, Children of Peace, Disciples of Christ, Millerites and the Holiness Movement Church - in nineteenth-century central Canada. Information is provided on these Dissenters in Montreal and the Eastern Townships. Arguing that these Dissenting "sects" were not "otherworldly" and apolitical, as some earlier historians claimed, the author maintains that the Dissenters were important participants in the societal dialogue regarding various aspects of central Canadian life.
