Abstract |
An examination of the various spaces in which Montreal's English-speaking upper class participated in recreation dance activities between 1870 and 1940. The focus of the author's analysis is on "exclusivism" usually associated with the lifestyle and activities of the bourgeoisie. The author examines four types of spaces that Montreal's English-speaking bourgeoisie spent its dancing leisure time: private homes and club houses, upper-class hotels (Windsor, Ritz-Carlton, Mount Royal), and businesses offering recreation dance in the north part of St. Antoine ward.
