Title
Identity and Language at a Multiethnic Elementary School: What Can Be Learned in a Fifteen-Minute Interview
Abstract
A qualitative inquiry into the linguistic perspective of eighteen grade 6 students at École Duncan, a multiethnic primary school located in the Montreal neighbourhood of Park Extension. The author notes that the children's perceptions and experiences were largely determined by a sense of belonging and opportunities to participate in the life of their communities. He argues that social factors influence the children's identities, which has a reciprocal effect upon their language learning.
