Abstract |
The history of a short-lived attempt to introduce a radical socialist labour union into Quebec in the 1920s. The One Big Union, which organized the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919, hired three organizers to establish the union in Quebec that year -- Richard Kerrigan, a bilingual Irish Montrealer; John D. Houston, an Ontario-born labour organizer who had moved to Montreal during the First World War; and Isidore Boltuck, a Russian-born Jewish immigrant who had immigrated to Montreal with his parents in 1903. The One Big Union had some success in the Montreal area, but was unable to compete with the Catholic Church-supported conservative unionism that also began its organization in the province in the 1920s.
