L’anglais en débat au Québec : mythes et cadrages

Abstract |
The author examines the take-away from what she refers to as the incessant discussion within French Quebec about the teaching of English in the province. Described by Francophone nationalists as the language of Lord Durham, a language that oppresses and threatens, and by others as the tool of the twenty-first century and opening up Quebec to the world, English has been the subject of debate among Francophones in the province for generations. The author examines newspapers, parliamentary debates, press releases and reports to trace the genesis of myths and the ways in which the debates about the English language in Quebec has been framed. Along the way, the author shows why the public discussion on the teaching of English is a part of the terrain for the long-lasting ideological struggle over the future of Quebec.
