Abstract |
From its founding in 1859 until it merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1912, the Eastern Townships Bank was a successful regional bank with thirty-five branches in the Eastern Townships, seventeen elsewhere in Quebec and branches in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. In 1873, the bank decided to commission a head office on Commercial Street (now Dufferin Street) in Sherbrooke. The building was designed by architect James Nelson (1830-1919), of the Montreal firm of Hopkins, Lawford & Nelson, in the Second Empire Style. Today, the building houses the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke.
