The Gate of Heaven: The Story of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim of Montreal
|
Abstract |
A celebration of the accomplishments of Congregation Shaar Hashomayimi, for over 150 years one of the most powerful and influential congregations within the Montreal Jewish community. Its members follow the Ashkenazi or German rite and customs. The author (1920-2018) is the congregation’s rabbi emeritus. Rabbi Shuchat tells of the emergence of Shaar Hashomayim as a congregation separate from the older Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, the generation-long tension between the two congregations, and the rebellion that produced the Temple Emanu-El. He describes how the struggle for Jewish educational rights ultimately produced a real public school system in Quebec as well as other unsung achievements of Montreal Jewry - the Board of Jewish Ministers, the de Sola Club, the Religious Welfare Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Pavilion at Expo '67, and the Jewish Introduction Service.
