Through the Lens of William Notman's Camera: The Exoticization of 'Indianness' in Montreal Fancy Dress Balls and Skating Carnivals
Abstract
The author points out that through the examination of Montreal photographer William Notman's late nineteenth-century photographs of the city's upper-middle class fancy dress masquerade balls and skating parties, placing emphasis on the act of dressing as an "Indian", one can begin to unravel how the Indigenous Other was stereotyped and exoticized in this period of Montreal's history.
