| Abstract |
A study of the relationship between Canada's Jewish community, especially those living in Quebec, with French and English Canadians up to the mid-1970s. According to the author, Jews, even those who were French-speaking, were never accepted into the French-speaking community. They were accepted into Quebec's English-speaking community previous to the mid-1800s in order to bolster that community's numbers against the French. However, in the latter part of the nineteenth century limits were set on Jewish integration into the English-speaking community, and Jews then began to develop their own autonomous community life in Canada. Yet Jewish people continued to ally themselves with the English community, especially for economic and political reasons.
