Abstract
A study of the emigration of nearly four million Irish men, women and children who left or were forced out of their homeland between the 1840s and 1900. The author uses extensive statistical information to describe the age, sex, religion and regional origin of these emigrants, as well as the agencies, both public and private, which were established to aid these mostly destitute people. Also included is a study of the reception received by the immigrants in North America, including Quebec.
