| Abstract |
The Scottish-born John Strachan was an Upper Canadian Anglican priest, politician and educator who became Bishop of Toronto in 1839. He had been ordained a priest by Bishop Jacob Mountain in 1803. Strachan’s July 3, 1825, eulogy for Jacob Mountain (1749-1825), the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec, mixed personal memory with a call for Canada to stand firm against encroaching Americanism. Strachan particularly chastised the Canadian Methodist Church for not being independent enough from its U.S. counterpart. The author contends that a recently discovered letter by Strachan shows that his motive for publishing the eulogy was not so much to deter Americanism or Methodism, but to win the favour of Mountain’s widow as part of a plan to counter a scheme by Mountain’s son, George Jehoshaphat Mountain, to become Bishop with control over Upper Canada. George Jehoshaphat Mountain (1789-1863) later became the third Bishop of Quebec (1836-1863), which included Upper Canada.
