Abstract |
The author describes the role of Montreal in eighteenth and nineteenth century fiction, particularly the city's central function in the creation of cultural myths about a Canadian identity. The themes in many novels under review, both Canadian and non-Canadian, revolve around conflicts between English-speaking Protestants and French-speaking Catholics. Also includes information on literary activities in Montreal during the period studied.
