Abstract |
The political affiliation of the Scottish-born John Neilson (1776-1848) to the nationalist and constitutional struggle in French Canada between 1818 and 1834. Neilson was first elected to Lower Canada's Legislative Assembly in 1818 and supported Louis Joseph Papineau's Parti Canadien. However, by the 1830s he broke with Papineau over the growing radical and republican stance that the latter was adopting.
