Abstract
Montreal railroad heiress Elsie Meighen Reford (1872-1967) turned her summer estate at Métis-sur-Mer, Quebec, into a large floral garden during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1961, the Quebec government acquired the estate and began a series of major renovations motivated by the public character of the garden. In 1995, the gardens were declared a national historic site.
