| Abstract |
An excerpt from Eastern Townships poet Ralph Baker Gustafson's (1909-1995) diary, dated January 8, 1966, detailing a party at the Montreal home of Frank Scott (1899-1985). The author explains that the excerpt "reveals a resounding clash between classical and pop culture during the 1960s." The author gives short biographies of the other poets at the gathering, including Leonard Cohen, Louis Dudek, John (Buffy) Glassco, Eldon Grier, Al Purdy, Doug Jones, Michael Gnarowski, and Irving Layton. The 1965 NFB documentary "Ladies and Gentlemen Mr. Leonard Cohen" was previewed at the gathering. Gustafson described the film as "embarrassing and distasteful," and the poems read by Cohen during it as "social realism filled with goo."
