| Abstract |
The Scottish-born Samuel Neilson (1771-1793) immigrated to Quebec City in 1785 to learn the compositor's craft in the printing shop of his uncle William Brown, a printer and the co-founder of the Quebec Gazette/La Gazette de Québec. On the death of Brown, Neilson purchased his uncle's newspaper and printing business. In 1792 he founded the Quebec Magazine/Le Magasin de Québec, but it ceased publication the year after Neilson's death in 1793. The newspaper and printing business was inherited by his younger brother, John Neilson (1776-1848).
