| Abstract |
Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899), Principal of McGill University, was Canada's leading nineteenth century critic of Darwinism. His opposition was based on the common linkage of special creation and design against the "unity" of natural selection and evolution. When the linkages fell apart, as they did in the nineteenth century, Dawson softened his opposition to Darwinian concepts. However, the author points out, Dawson did not identify evolution with natural selection.
