Abstract |
An examination of the literary imagination of nineteenth century Quebec, specifically the social imaginary of crime. Among the crimes the author examines are that of the Chambers Gang and the killing of the Seigneur of Kamouraska by George Holmes. The Chambers Gang was a small group of Quebec City region criminals in the 1830s who were responsible for several spectacular thefts and murder. Charles Chambers (ca 1812-1837), the gang leader, was arrested in 1835, accused of murder and robbery. He managed to avoid conviction on all charges. The following year her was arrested again on a burglary charge, was convicted after some of his gang testified against him and was sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to life in an Australian penal colony. He died on the way to Australia. Following his death, Chambers' exploits was immortalized in a semi-fictionalized book by François-Réal Angers titled: Les révélations du crime ou Cambray et ses complices. In 1839, Doctor George Holmes murdered Achille Taché, the Seigneur of Kamouraska and husband of the woman Holmes loved. Anne Hébert recounted this story in her novel titled: Kamouraska (1970).
