| Abstract |
An examination of the impact of the Depression on the political behaviour of the predominately anglo-Protestant residents of N.D.G. and Westmount, based on an analysis of three contemporary daily newspapers (the Gazette, the Montreal Star, and the Montreal Herald) and two weekly journals (the Westmount Examiner and the N.D.G. Monitor). Examined are the provincial election of 1931 and the federal election of 1935. The Anglophone voters in this part of Montreal traditionally voted for the Conservative Party, and did so in the 1931 provincial election. However, following the formation of the Union Nationale in 1935, born out of a merger between dissident provincial Liberals and the provincial Conservatives, the Anglophone votes for Conservatives in the riding in the 1935 federal election dropped significantly.
