| Abstract |
The author examines two aspects of Quebec society between 1898 and 1921 as they relate to Ireland: the survival of the ethnic sentiment of "Irishness" among Irish Catholics in the province; and the impact of Ireland's Home Rule movement on French Canadian nationalists. Many Irish in Montreal and Quebec City actively supported the struggle for Ireland's autonomy by investing both their time and money into the cause. Ireland's Home Rule movement echoed the rise of French Canadian cultural and political nationalism. Although the two communities in Quebec worked (sometimes jointly, sometimes independently) for the ambiguous cause of "liberty of Ireland", the author maintains that various tensions and animosities between the Irish Catholics and French Canadians prevented reconciliation between these two Catholic communities.
