| Abstract |
The Scottish-born Reid (1780-1865) converted from the Congregational Church to the Church of England, and was ordained a priest in the Anglican religion in Quebec City in 1816. He was appointed curate of the Eastern Township parish of St. Armand, Missisquoi County, near the Vermont border, and served there until his retirement in 1861. During this period, he filled 36 volumes of a diary outlining his reflections on being a pastor, insights into local rivalries and community life, and commentary on religious questions and political affairs of the day. In 1864, shortly before his death, he burned all but two volumes of the diary. The remaining volumes cover the period November 1848 to July 1851.
