| Abstract |
An examination of the experiences of the Jewish legal community in Montreal using both historical data and oral testimony to analyze the character of legal practice for Jewish lawyers. The authors argue that Jewish lawyers in the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century were excluded from new economic and professional opportunities due to anti-ethnic, especially anti-Semitic, attitudes within established law firms. Jewish lawyers in Montreal responded by committing themselves to the protection and development of their community. They promoted their community’s perception that the legal profession was a vehicle, not a barrier, for attaining justice.
