|
Abstract |
An examination of the movement and development of Montreal's Jewish community from the 1880s until 1945. The author describes the social, religious and economic aspects of this community through the architectural traces of its culture. She chronicles the Eastern European Jews' mass migration to Montreal at the turn of the twentieth century and their determination to retain their familiar traditions and familial connections. The author explains how their places of worship also became havens where the immigrants could meet, exchange concerns, lend support, and resolve to help those left behind.
