| Abstract |
An examination of the class and ethnic division in Quebec sports from the mid-nineteenth century to the turn of the twentieth century. The author points out that French Quebecers came into contact with Anglophone sportsmen on a limited basis from 1840-60, became sportsmen in their own right in the 1870s and 1880s, but stayed within the confines of their province until the turn of the century. He considers the differential evolution of Francophone and Anglophone organized sport in Quebec and discusses the role played by socioeconomic class, occupational prestige, life style and economic capability, as well as ethnic factors.
