A Tempest in Three Teapots: Yom Kippur Balls in London, New York and Montreal
|
Abstract |
The author compares Jewish public reaction to three festive balls held in Montreal, London and New York in the late nineteenth century by Jewish anarchists who intended to make an anti-religious statement on the holiest of Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur. The author discuss the factors that led to the rise and fall of the Yom Kippur ball while placing its development within a broader historical framework.
