Abstract
Jacob Raphael Cohen (c. 1738-1811) was engaged by the Shearith Israel Congregation in Montreal in 1778 for three years to act as shochet (ritual slaughterer), hazan (precentor), teacher of Hebrew and of the religious tradition, and reader from the sacred scrolls of the Pentateuch. He arrived in Montreal from England in 1779 and remained in the city until 1782. He then served the Jewish community in New York until 1784, then was engaged by the Jewish community of Philadelphia, where he remained until his death in 1811. Cohen kept a record book of his activities as a minister which is considered one of the important sources for Jewish history in North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In addition to the list of circumcisions, marriages, and burials, the record book provides a written description of liturgies.
