Title
Writing the Tripple Whammy: Canadian-Jewish Québécois Identity, the Comedy of Self-Deprecation, and the Triumph of Duddy Kravitz
Abstract
An examination of how Montreal novelist Mordecai Richler (1931-2001) used his "triple whammy" curse -- a member of a despised minority, living in a province alienated from and marginalized by a dominant national culture, and in a country forever looking enviously and anxiously at its more illustrious and powerful neighbour -- to his advantage. The author argues that Richler used his status as a member of three different stigmatized groups for the self-deprecating humour that characterizes his writing.
