| Abstract |
The author argues that the Eastern Townships’ temperance crusade of the early nineteenth century developed its own dynamic compared to the rest of Canada. In the 1840s, the externally based Independent Order of Rechabites dominated the temperance movement in the region. Potato whiskey was the home-brew of choice in the Townships.
