Le double devoir d'exemplarité
|
Abstract |
The author notes that Quebec professionals are obliged to “play an exemplary role” both in the practice of their profession and within the public administration. He points out that this role extends to the language sphere, since professionals must also have “an appropriate knowledge of the official language to exercise [their] profession.” The author contends that this is a professional skill serving as a “driver” in the implementation of language and professional laws and policies. He claims that thanks to the mobilizing framework of the Quebec professional system, the good professional citizen ensures quality every step of the way for both language and professional services. However, he points out that since the Charter of the French Language allows for the use of English in certain circumstances, English-speaking professionals must monitor the quality of their two languages with the ultimate goal of protecting the public and respecting the continuity of the common (i.e. French) language.
