|
Abstract |
A description of the events preceding and following the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, as outlined in a series of six letters written by William Foster Coffin (1808-1878) between January 24, 1834 and March 17, 1840. The letters describe the rebellions from an English Quebecer's perspective. A lawyer by training, Foster was a volunteer against the Patriotes in 1837, and was appointed assistant civil secretary for Lower Canada in 1838, police magistrate in 1839, commissioner of police for Lower Canada in 1840, and joint sheriff of the District of Montreal in 1842.
