The Language Crisis: An Exchange of Views
|
Abstract |
An exchange of differing views between the two authors over the demographic status of the Anglophone community in Quebec in the late 1970s, following the introduction of Bill 101, the Charter of the French Language. Stevenson argues that based on the 1971 census data used by Beaujot, individuals in Quebec with a French mother tongue increased by 4.4 percent in the five year period prior to the 1976 victory of the Parti Québécois government, while individuals with an English mother tongue increased by only 3.3 percent and "others" actually decreased (for the first time in history) by 8.4 percent. Since the English group in Quebec during this period augmented itself by assimilating immigrants and not to any extent by assimilating Francophones, Stevenson's conclusion was that the pool of potential Anglophones in Quebec was diminishing.
