Une minorité dans la minorité : les communautés juives montréalaises face aux lois linguistiques québécoises

Abstract |
The author notes that the language question did not have the same connotation for the Jewish population as it did for Quebec’s broader English-speaking minority. He explains that this different positioning was due to a combination of historical, demographic, and political factors that took the Jews in a different direction, including, first and foremost, the fact that, in the Montreal context, there was no direct link between being Jewish and speaking English. Focusing on discussions within Jewish community organizations at the time of the Bill 101 debates, the author demonstrates that the most pressing issue for those associated with Judaism was, above all, preserving fundamental rights and protecting religious minorities of immigrant origin. In this specific context, the author argues, the linguistic issue was, for Jews collectively, only of secondary importance.
