Abstract |
Elsie Reford (1872-1967), a Montreal philanthropist and the creator of the Reford Gardens at Grand-Métis, used to split her time between Montreal and the Lower St. Lawrence region. When in Montreal, charity, society life and politics were her main occupations; in Grand-Métis, she devoted herself to her family and her gardens. According to the author, the concrete and theoretical boundaries between Ms. Reford's public and private spheres are highlighted by the spacialization of her activities and by the different ways she secured for herself a measure of freedom depending on whether she was in Montreal or Grand-Métis.
