A systematic effort by the author to trace the growth of English-language literature in Quebec prior to 1867, and its contribution to the formation of English-Canadian nationalism. Noted by the author that at the time of the writing of his thesis there was still a debate as to whether there existed a "true Canadian literature", he nevertheless argues that his study is a contribution to the "literary background" of Canada.
